Chapter 8

I checked the time on my phone and yawned. “It’s after eleven. I think I’ll go to bed.” I didn’t really want to sleep because of the nightmares I was sure to have—seeing two people murdered so violently wasn’t something you forgot in a hurry if ever—but I was weary, both body and soul. Maybe I’d ask Angelica to give me a mindwipe when this was all over.

Abby purred. Okay. I’ll come with you. I smiled, turned off the TV, and stood from the couch. I’d been waiting all night for Will or Angelica to contact me, but they must’ve been too busy. Surely any meeting could now wait until tomorrow.

I turned off the light and crossed the hallway to the stairs. My phone dinged, and I jumped. “Oh, God. Seriously. Why is everyone always trying to kill me?” Abby meowed, and it sounded suspiciously like laughter.

I looked at my phone. It was a message from Will. Heads-up. We’re all coming back now for a meeting. Make sure you’re decent. Hopefully tracksuit pants and T-shirt were decent. And I was wearing a bra. That should be enough to keep everyone happy. I turned around and opened the reception-room door, ready to draw my magic in case someone I didn’t expect came through. After being kidnapped the other week, I wasn’t taking any chances.

Will was the first to come through. As soon as he saw me, he smiled. His large stride took no time to reach me. His arms came around me, squishing me into his chest. “I’ve missed you.”

“I saw you late this afternoon.”

“Yeah, and it’s now almost midnight. I don’t usually do this, but after witnessing what went down in that train, I’m just counting my blessings. You know?”

I tilted my face up and kissed his lips. “Yes, I do know. Come on. Let’s get out of the way before everyone else comes in.” We moved to the living room. This time, Will ignored the dining chairs I’d magicked there for our last meeting. He dropped onto one of the Chesterfields and pulled me with him to sit on his lap. Abby had followed us and jumped up to sit in my lap. A click, click on the floor heralded Ted’s arrival. He wagged his tail, and I patted him. When that was done, he sat at Will’s feet. Well, this was cosy.

“I love my little family.” Will kissed the top of my head and gave Abby a pat.

“And we love you.”

“Meow.”

“Woof.”

“Hey, loves.” Imani came in and sat next to me. “I’m bloody exhausted.” Her head drooped forward, and she shut her eyes.

I frowned. “Did you find out anything from that woman, the one he called out to?”

“It’s her ex.” Will’s grip on my waist tightened. “Scumbag. He’s been threatening her since they broke up three months ago. She started dating someone last week, which is what we think triggered him to act.”

James, Mum, Beren, Liv, and Angelica came in.

I looked past them, but no one else came through the door.
